jlk – Today, Friday (8/3/2024), Google adorns the Google Search homepage with an eye-catching doodle. The doodle marks International Women’s Day, celebrated every March 8.

This year’s International Women’s Day doodle features three characters of women of different ages: young, adult, and elderly. The three characters are depicted in colorful and accessorized styles.

The doodle also incorporates the female gender symbol, a circle atop a cross, as the first “O” in the word “Google”. Meanwhile, the second “O” surrounds the three female characters in a circular form.

International Women’s Day is a day designated by the United Nations (UN) since 1975 to honor the struggles and contributions of women in various fields such as politics, economics, social, cultural, and more.

International Women’s Day also aims to raise awareness of gender equality and to eliminate discrimination and violence against women worldwide.

The idea of International Women’s Day was first proposed by Clara Zetkin, an activist and advocate for women’s rights, in 1910 at the International Working Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

March 8 was chosen as International Women’s Day because it coincides with two major demonstrations by women demanding their rights, in Saint Petersburg in 1917 and in New York in 1908.

Through this doodle, Google aims to appreciate the women who have paved the way and inspired future generations. Google also seeks to raise awareness of important issues facing women today, such as wage gaps, reproductive rights, and violence prevention.

“This tribute is dedicated to those who have paved the way and carried that torch further, happy International Women’s Day!,” Google wrote on the Google Doodle page.
